That's not a coincidence you can out-discipline; it's a mismatch between a brain and an environment, and mismatches get fixed by changing the environment.

The collision
Two things are true at once, and it's the combination that matters.
The first: modern digital products deliver rewards on a variable-ratio schedule. Ferster and Skinner established in 1957 that unpredictable reward produces the highest response rates and the strongest resistance to giving up, of any schedule tested.[1] That's true for every human nervous system.
The second: Barkley's model puts behavioral inhibition — the capacity to pause between a stimulus and a response — at the foundation of executive function, and identifies it as the core impairment in ADHD.[2]
Put them together. The environment produces continuous, unpredictable stimuli. The response to those stimuli is governed by the gap between stimulus and action. ADHD makes that gap narrower.
This isn't a willpower gap. It's a design that happens to target the exact thing you have least of.
The consequence is worth stating carefully, because the usual version of it is patronizing. Nobody with ADHD is morally weaker about their phone. They're operating with a narrower inhibition window inside an environment engineered to exploit narrow inhibition windows. That's a mismatch between a person and a setting, and mismatches get resolved by changing the setting.
Reward, interest, and why boring is the barrier
The second mechanism is about what motivates action in the first place.
Volkow and colleagues examined the dopamine reward pathway in adults with ADHD and found reduced availability of dopamine receptors and transporters in reward-related regions.[3] The clinical implication they drew concerns motivation: tasks that don't generate sufficient reward signal are harder to engage, independent of how much the person values the outcome.
The clinician William Dodson describes the practical version of this as an interest-based rather than importance-based nervous system: engagement follows interest, novelty, challenge, and urgency more reliably than it follows stated priority. That framing comes from clinical observation rather than controlled research, and it's worth treating as a useful description rather than an established mechanism. It does describe the experience accurately.
Now consider what your phone offers versus what your tax return offers. Novelty, unpredictability, immediate feedback, and social salience — against an important task with none of those properties. The contest isn't close, and it isn't about caring.
The useful reframe: stop asking why you're drawn to the phone. That's fully explained. Ask what would make the other thing generate any signal at all — a deadline that's visible, a first step small enough to be immediate, a reason that connects to something you actually care about. You're not fighting the phone's pull. You're supplying what the alternative is missing.
Hyperfocus, and what it says about the name
Hyperfocus is the state of intense, sustained absorption in something engaging, during which hours vanish and external cues stop registering. It's common in ADHD and it sits strangely next to a diagnosis whose name promises an attention deficit.
That strangeness is informative. If attention were simply absent, hyperfocus couldn't happen. What's impaired is the regulation of attention — directing it on demand and disengaging it on demand — rather than the supply. This is exactly Barkley's argument that the condition is better described as a self-regulation disorder, and that the name keeps pointing people at the wrong interventions.
Hyperfocus is also why "just get absorbed in your work" is unhelpful advice. Absorption isn't the missing capability. Choosing what gets absorbed is.
What technology does and doesn't cause
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition with substantial heritability, described in the clinical literature long before smartphones existed. Screens don't cause it, and claims that they do tend to confuse a condition with an environment that makes it more expensive.
What technology does is multiply the number of moments per day where inhibition is required. The same impairment costs more in an environment with a thousand daily prompts than in one with a dozen. Someone whose ADHD was manageable in 1995 can be genuinely struggling now without anything about their neurology having changed.
That distinction matters for what you do next. If the environment is what changed, the environment is the lever — and that's a more actionable conclusion than either "this is a modern epidemic" or "nothing is different."
The phone is also the prosthetic
Here's the complication that makes blunt advice unworkable: the device causing the problem is also the best assistive tool available.
The same phone that fragments your attention holds the reminders that get you to appointments, the calendar that compensates for time blindness, the alarms, the maps, the captured note that stops an idea from evaporating. Barkley's point about the point of performance applies directly — support has to be present in the moment and place where the behavior is needed, and the thing that's always in your pocket is uniquely good at being there.
So "get rid of the phone" is bad advice for ADHD specifically. What works is separating the two roles the device is playing and treating them differently.
- The prosthetic functions — reminders, calendar, capture, timers — should be as frictionless as possible. Home screen, one tap, notifications on.
- The extraction functions — feeds, autoplay, endless scroll — should be as high-friction as you can stand. Off the home screen, notifications disabled, logged out, or removed entirely.
Most people apply one setting to the whole device and end up either unsupported or overwhelmed. The sort is the useful move.
Choosing tools that survive
There's a recognizable pattern with ADHD and productivity software: enthusiastic adoption, elaborate setup, three good weeks, silence. It's common enough that people treat it as evidence about themselves.
It's usually evidence about the tool. Systems fail here for predictable reasons, and the reasons are checkable before you invest a weekend.
It asks for the resource you're short of. Tagging, nesting, weekly reviews, maintenance rituals. All of that is executive function, spent on the system rather than the work. A tool that needs a functioning executive to run it is no help to someone whose executive is the constraint.
It requires more than one decision per item. Every judgment is a charge. Systems asking you to rate urgency, importance, energy, context, and duration are asking for five, and the fifth one is where you stop. This is the core failure of the Eisenhower Matrix for ADHD.
It gives you categories where you needed a sequence. A sorted list still doesn't say what to do next. If the tool stops at classification, the hardest decision is still yours, every time you open it.
It punishes gaps. Streaks work until the day you break one, and then the tool that was helping becomes a source of shame. For anyone already carrying shame about productivity, that's worse than no system.
It requires reading to be understood. If knowing what's important means reading every row, you pay working-memory cost on every glance. Visible encoding — color, position — costs almost nothing by comparison.
What to look for instead:
- One decision per item, made once, at capture.
- A fixed work order, so the system answers "what now?" rather than asking it.
- Priority visible at a glance, without reading and comparing.
- No streaks, no scores, nothing that turns a bad week into a penalty.
- Recoverable after a gap, because gaps are certain.
What to actually change
Ordered by leverage.
- Sort the device into prosthetic and extraction. Reminders and capture stay frictionless. Feeds get harder to reach. One pass, permanent benefit.
- Turn off every notification that isn't a person. Resisting one costs inhibition, which is the impaired capacity. Never receiving one costs nothing.
- Externalize the priority. Working memory is small in everyone and is what interruption takes first. Put it on a screen. See executive function.
- Decide when you're calm. Under load, urgency perception flattens and everything reads as equally on fire. Decide early; inherit later. See why everything feels urgent.
